Instruction on how to calculate the Bern CCI with use of the online calculator

As the Bern CCI integrates every complication and subsequent interventions, the first step is to classify all complications and subsequent interventions according to the CDC (I – V).

Further points to note:

(1)   Complications caused by a therapy of a prior complication count as two or more distinct    complications (e.g. anaphylactic reaction after blood transfusion for postoperative anaemia).

(2)   Complications caused by a prior complication count as two or more distinct complications (e.g. wound healing disorder after bowel perforation postoperatively).

(3)   One complication requiring repetitive interventions count as two or more distinct complications (e.g. several VAC changes for wound healing disorder).

(4)   One complication requiring multiple interventions count as two or more distinct complications (e.g. indwelling catheter insertion, blood transfusion and subsequent transurethral clot evacuation for ongoing haematuria).

(5)   Furthermore, a planned second look after surgery (e.g. second look after necrotizing fasciitis) or a postoperative deterioration of a pre-existing morbidity (e.g. dialysis for acute on chronic renal failure postoperatively) count as a complication as well.
